Americans were accustomed to the Bread Line nd the Unemployment Line back in the 1930s, but we’re having these today as well.

Some employees lose their jobs through no fault of their own. However, some other times, there is cause for termination.

Dishonesty, evasion, or lack of integrity on the job can be the culprit, as well as lack of training and misunderstandings. It is important to be honest, straightforward, and forthcoming on the job with your management and then to insist on proper training and fair treatment as well.

A long time women’s health agency may be preventing the creation of new Health and Medical jobs in the Obstetrics and Transplantation fields by handing over aborted fetal tissues and organs to researchers and people in the market for new human parts.

This is still an allegation at this point, but a possibility.

Another possibility is that PP will be defunded and all those jobs will be lost.

How many jobs might be lost to such an alleged undercover system? — Likely thousands of positions that America needs for its job seekers from health aides through nurses, med techs, nurse practitioners and physicians.

During July 2015, international media news and two undercover YouTube videos of a tipsy PP Executive declaring she wants a high-priced sports car alleged that Planned Parenthood sells aborted tissues and organs. People at the agency insist that they charge only transportation costs. Some reporters called for an audit of the standard price schedules of that transportation and a match of them to PP’s accounts receivables numbers.

Will the figures match and what about back door sales, those sales not recorded and “off the books?”

We’re not accusing Planned Parenthood of larceny, but the public is demanding to know. PP should willingly submit to an external audit and an investigation that looks for off the record transactions.

A second part of the allegation is that illegal partial birth abortions are used to obtain whole organs rather than destroyed organs for sale and this is unacceptable.

A thorough investigation is necessary, although undercover videos0 are demoralizing, especially the PP Executive under the influence, even if comments may be out of context or perhaps a bad joke.

Look for more conjecture in the build up to Election 2016.

The world of psychology is in upheaval since in July 2015, it was revealed via international news that the American Psychological Association may have been complicit with torture used in interrogations at places such as Abu Graib. How will this affect the mental health industry in the future? First, APA immediately notified all members what had happened, as revealed in depth in an analysis known at the Hoffman report. Several top office holders in APA retired early or stepped down from their positions and an internal investigation and house straightening began. I commend the APA leadership for tackling the situation immediately. I respect the organization, especially for developing several divisions within its working to advocate and support any and all who have been marginalized, abused, and yes, even tortured in the past. APA seems always to take immediate action to right wrongs. Back in 1947 under the APA Presidency of Carl Rogers, The Ohio State University psychology department temporarily lost accreditation for irregularities in research conduct. The university department readily earned back its accreditation. APA was fast to right the problem. Current problems include a holdover of abuse and marginalization of women and minorities of several types and APA will advocate until these situations end. Psychology is still a magnificent field to enter and I hope current news stories about interrogation terrors will not harm the field. No organization or country can watch all its members all the time, though Heaven knows, some try. When a problem emerges and an organization takes care of it, give them some respect. Thanks, and happy job seeking!

Increasing numbers of assaults in American emergency rooms against healthcare professionals and medical support staff have been recorded as initiated by various patients, their relatives, and significant others. Some of these attacks are assaults with deadly weapons. This may be one reason that we have a shortage of healthcare professionals working today.

During January 2015, such an assault – a shooting – happened in Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. It caused the death of a heart surgeon, Michael J. Davidson, MD. His patient, an older woman, died and her son came into the hospital a few months later with a loaded gun to seek vengeance. He is in the legal system at this time, but that does not bring back the deceased doctor, whose patients have been added to the already heavy workload of other professionals..

This is not an isolated incident. At St. John’s Hospital in Mapplewood, Minnesota a male patient pulled a metal bar out of the railing on the side of his bed, chased a nurse down a hallway, and beat her when she fell. In Central Ohio we are hearing about patients and visitors becoming angry and violent about wait times, questions about treatment, and other irritants. Families sometimes fight among themselves and the healthcare staff is injured when they attempt to intervene to keep the hospital an orderly place.

America seems always short of nurses and doctors. Before Obamacare took effect in 2013 – 2014, estimates were that the numbers of nurses, doctors, and support staff needed after Obamacare would decrease, but the opposite has been true.

To fill medical and other health care treatment and support positions across the United States, steps must be taken to ensure safety on the job.  Everyone deserves a safe workplace.

Chicago, home of Second City and the First Family – the Obamas,  offers oceans of opportunities for career and education seekers. A very progressive city, it hosts green initiative projects with hundreds of green collar jobs and research opportunities, a respected tradition of criminology based in change through rehabilitation and prevention, cutting edge healthcare, famous architecture styles, amazing culinary training, and successful social services and women’s organizations.

During Welfare to Work (W2W) years under President Bill Clinton, Chicago agencies helped 100s of folks obtain a car to drive to work, rather than to sit home without transportation or a job. Right now, thousands of jobs are available – on average, 150,000 to 250,00+ each month since 2012.

“You must have all your teeth pulled immediately.”

That’s what a friend of mine was told when that person presented an Insurance Card and underwent an oral examination. Extractions were covered, but other services were not – not even a cleaning.

Residents of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio were pleased when governors accepted the option of expanding Medicaid coverage to state residents of higher income levels, but they learned that coverage is not very good. Someone is paying a lot of money in taxes for these covered persons to receive nothing.

A dentist advised the patient mentioned above to have all teeth pulled, because root canals, caps, and bridges would not be a covered expense. But, one set of dentures every two years would be covered.

HEALTHCARE

Because of the again Baby Boomers and the nurses and doctor that are also ging Baby Boomers. the Healthcare Industry is booming larger than expected.  Not only are job vacancies increasing for RNs and LPNs, along with a number of fancily-named aides, but more and more nurses are called upon to become Nurse Practitioners (NPs).

In fact, it seems in Internet postings that job openings for Physician Assistants are often changing into new listings for Nurse Practitioners. Another growing trend is for Travel Nursing, which includes assignments to posh sites, transportation reimbursement for airfare, mortgage or rental payment for up to a year, higher wages, and many other perks.

Overall, at least 34 – 40% or more of America’s current nursing staff are retiring before 2020. For example, in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, a large proportion of working RNs are 55 years old or older already in 2013.  Nursing instructors and professors do not make as much money, so nurses are staying on the hospital floor and out of the university faculty. Who is going to teach our new nurses and nurse practitioners that we need so badly?

Healthcare as a business is increasing as well because of adult and childhood obesity on the rise. In fact, the average lifespan of  US middle schoolers seems to be reducing, because of this phenomenon. However, despite First Lady Michelle Obama’s effort with the Let’s Move Program and healthy eating, kids in the USA, Canada, and Mexico need more help along those lines. We hope that they will not need all of expensive electronic replacement organs and the awesome 3D printer replacement body parts available even today.

The Aerospace Industry is recognizing the need for health and medical practitioners for the growing private and NASA space programs. Mental health professionals are as necessary as medical practitioners “up there”, because the first astronauts to spend a full year on the International Space Station will do so before 2015. It is not going to be the most comfortable or healthy year without planning and help. With a scheduled private fight to Mars in 2018, these issues really need to be addressed.

Other new avenues opening in the Healthcare Industry include genetic testing and genetic counseling, baby designing, and related phenomena. Why, you can even use DNA tests to procure the perfect mate or design a great dog! This all must create some sort of mental impact.

Regarding that mental impact, the new DSM 5 diagnostic manual of the American Psychiatric Association is released on May 13, 2013. It contains a lot of changes and some new maladies, so professional diagnosis, prescription medication, and SSI/SSDI support will all be affected down the line. Almost frightening is related research that gives evidence to the links between ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Schizophrenia, Major Depression, and Bi-Polar Disorder. The non-degreed lay persons that are smugly misdiagnosing these conditions over the Internet and the back yard gossip fence are not helping any.

Fortunately, jobs leading to careers for people who are or will become qualified to help patients and clients in all aspects medical and mental are increasing, as are college and university programs to train them – except for nurses, which really needs an influx of new students as well as higher wages for nursing instructors.

n 2013, longtime singer with a string of hits Glen Campbell announced that he has Alzheimer’s Disease and finished a last farewell tour. Within a few month, he entered a memory car facility to alleviate his family from the care he needs 24/7. However, music is becoming a large part of his therapy, be self-help or otherwise.

Campbell, his family, and treatment staff found that music helps him maintain memories and much of his cognition. He has a guitar with him and performs for the other clients and staff says he feels good. He will sing and play as long as he is able to do so, usually in the living room of the residential center, where fellow clients and staff gather to listen. It is surely nice to have a music legend living among them.

Some Major American Problems

Unpaid Alzheimer’s care provided by women for almost 75% of the American cases has resulted in a cost equivalent to multiple billions of US dollars across billions of man-hours.These caregivers are giving out and becoming ill.

If the percentage and numbers of patients continues to increase, the US may not be able to provide care for an estimated 16,000,000 patients in the year 2050. We need more paid careers in caregiving.

Additional research and early intervention must receive more focus, but new findings come in every day:
