8You may think that you do not know about any biophysicists or biochemists.

However, two of these bioscience professionals are very well known: James D. Watson and Francis Crick. With the foundation research of art least one talented female assistant, these scientists discovered the double helix of DNA in the 1960s.

Among other applications, this discovery led to further discoveries in the diagnosis and treatment of the genetic causes of many diseases and conditions that are nearly erradicated 50 years later. Further, severed spinal columns and new organs can be grown today.

In the 21st Century, the original Watson-Crick discoveries are the basis for new medical treatments and for developing ways of surviving long-term in reduced gravity in places like like the International Space Station, the Moon, and Mars.
