It is Elvis Week and I am remembering my cousin a few times removed, ELVIS PRESLEY. He was a man from a poor town that changed the nature of American culture. I wish I had met him.
Another person from a small town that is changing our culture lives in London, Ohio about 30 miles from me — 12-year-old Nathan Sorrell and Nike began receiving hate mail from his 2012 Summer Olympics ad.
Some of it said the ad was exploitation. Other people put Nathan down for even trying to exercise; but Nathan said he had so much fun that he ignored the difficulty of running through take after take of filming. It changed his life.
At one point, he so much that he vomited and ended up in a ditch, but he was no quitter.
From Nathan on haters: “That just motivates me more because I want to get on my feet and do extra time for those people who have enough time to be able to sit there and write mean comments on the Internet, when they could be doing something like I am.”
Right you are, Nathan.
