This year in the Viet Nam Conflict was known for all types of new music.  Whale song was first recorded in 1970, and ended up in the Top 10 of the Top 100 Songs of 1970 on Billboard charts.

By the 1990s, researchers discovered that Humpback Whales had learned the tune of Amazing Grace from ancestors that had swum by the bellies of slave ships full of Africans singing their own melodies from home.  One was the tune to the favorite hymn, though it was not a hymn at that time. The whales passed it down the generations.

Songs of a Humpback Whale in 1970 changed minds about whales ans their intelligence. See  The Top 10 Most Popular Songs of 1970 in the Viet Nam War Era — Whale Song to Hard Rock.

That whale song recording of 1970 and the period Earth Day Movement of the 70s gave impetus to the Save the Whales Campaign and the conservation message in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Parallels to the Moby Dick story permeated Star Trek II, III, and IV, but laughter took over in The Voyage Home and the whales were the real stars.

It took 16 years for whales to star in a film and 16 years for Leonard Nimoy to go to Hollywood and act his way by 1966 into becoming Spock forever.  His direction of Star Trek IV was the best! Enjoy  Classics – Whales in Science Fiction and Literature
