Many of these fun day trips around Mid-Michigan or very inexpensive or free and appropriate for most seasons fo the year.

Delta College Planetarium and Hell’s Half Mile Film and Music Festival

The planetarium and observatory expanded and absorbed the Bay City Visitors Center as well. It’s the perfect starting point to walking tours around the east and west downtown shopping districts. During the first weekend in October, the inexpensive Hell’s Half Mile Film and Music Festival celebrates Indie films and music at the Planetarium and other businesses within a 2-3 block area.

Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland

This unique place is a megastore in Little Bavaria that began as a hobby of sorts. It grew so fast that a large chunk of land needed to be purchased to hold it all. Now it is surrounded by hotels, a waterpark, a light show, a petting zoo/campground and a museum around the corner. Just 5 block away is the bustling Downtown Area with shops, restaurants, horse-drawn carriage tours, boat rides, and seasonal events.

The Bay City Riverwalk and Railtrail

From  17 to 23 miles in total length depending on the route you take, you can walk and bike to see giant freighters sailing trough drawbridges or giant herons standing in even larger trees. The Riverwalk is one of the longest such venues in the country.

Mackinac Island Walking Tour

Walking Tours of Mackinac Island are free and passage on a high-speed ferry is inexpensive, particular when travellers receive a group rate. On my last visit, I camped at a wonderful family owned campground started after WWII to give servicemen recreational opportunities and the lace has expanded but maintained its low prices and free shuttle bus to the ferry docks and Downtown Mackinaw City. The view from the camp site of the entire 5 miles of the Mackinac Bridge and the Grand Hotel on the island is breathtaking.  Many people camp, pack a lunch and go to the island for a day. Many of the sights are free and the walk around the island is gorgeous and relaxing.
